Containers and planning permission: what you need to know

Prior declaration or permit: floor area, duration and use determine the formalities before installation (French rules).

Under French rules, a container placed on the ground for a long period is treated as a building. The formalities then depend on its size: above 20 m² of footprint a building permit is generally required; between 5 and 20 m², a prior declaration is usually enough.

Duration matters too. A temporary installation linked to a building site or event falls under lighter rules. A permanent installation, especially if lived in, follows local planning rules like any other building.

Before ordering, check the local development plan and your municipality's planning office. They will tell you whether the area is buildable, which appearance rules apply and which documents to provide.

We can send you the container's drawings and technical specifications for your application. Rules vary from one municipality and country to another: this article gives general guidance, not legal advice.
