20 or 40 ft: how to choose the right size

Volume, site access, cost per cubic metre: three questions to ask before choosing a container length.

Choosing between a 20 and a 40 ft is rarely about volume alone. A 40 ft offers twice the space of a 20 ft for less than twice the price: per cubic metre, it costs less. But it needs access and a drop zone that not every site can offer.

First question, then: how will the container get there? A 20 ft is delivered by crane truck and fits into most yards, gardens and building sites. A 40 ft arrives on a container carrier and needs a lifting crane or handling machine, with enough room to manoeuvre.

Second question: what will you put in it? For site equipment, archives or seasonal stock, a 20 ft is often enough. For bulky furniture, vehicles or a home conversion, the 40 ft — and even more its high cube version — makes a real difference.

Third question: will the container need to move? A 20 ft is easier to move from one site to another. If you are unsure, send us a few photos of the access and an idea of the use: we will tell you the best size and delivery method.
